Summer Car Prep Checklist for Las Vegas — Don't Get Stranded in 115°F

Las Vegas summer destroys cars that aren't prepared. Complete pre-summer checklist: A/C, cooling, battery, tires, fluids. Prevent breakdowns before they happen.

By Dmitry Morgunov

Las Vegas Summer Is Coming. Is Your Car Ready?

Every June through September, Las Vegas tow companies see a 40% spike in roadside breakdowns. Overheated engines, dead batteries, blown A/C compressors — all preventable with a simple pre-summer check.

Here’s the exact checklist our mechanics use at BiTurbo.

The 10-Point Summer Prep Checklist

1. A/C System Check ($77.77)

Your A/C works overtime in Vegas — 8+ hours per day at max cooling. Test it NOW, not when it’s already 110°F and every shop is booked 2 weeks out.

Check: Vent temperature (should be 40-45°F), refrigerant pressure, compressor clutch engagement, cabin filter condition.

2. Cooling System Inspection ($49.99)

The most critical summer check. One cracked hose = stranded on the 15 freeway.

Check: Coolant level and condition, hose firmness (squeeze test), radiator cap seal, thermostat function, water pump for play/leaks.

3. Battery Test (Free with any service)

Las Vegas heat kills batteries 30% faster. A battery that survived winter might die on the first 110°F day.

Check: Load test, terminal corrosion, charge rate. Replace if over 3 years old.

4. Tire Pressure & Condition

Hot pavement + underinflated tires = blowout. For every 10°F increase in ambient temperature, tire pressure rises ~1 PSI.

Check: Pressure (when cool, in the morning), tread depth (penny test), sidewall cracking, spare tire condition.

5. All Fluids

Heat thins fluids and accelerates breakdown.

Check: Engine oil (color + level), transmission fluid, brake fluid (moisture test), power steering fluid, windshield washer (use a summer formula that doesn’t streak).

6. Belts and Hoses

Rubber deteriorates in desert heat. A serpentine belt failure kills your A/C, power steering, and alternator simultaneously.

Check: Belt cracking/glazing, hose softness/swelling, clamp tightness.

7. Cabin Air Filter

Running your A/C with a clogged cabin filter makes the system work harder, reduces cooling, and can burn out the blower motor.

Replace: Every 15,000 miles or annually. In dusty Las Vegas, we recommend every 12 months.

8. Windshield Wipers & Washer

Summer monsoons hit fast. Sun-baked wipers streak instead of clearing.

Replace: Every 6 months in Las Vegas. The UV destroys rubber faster than anywhere.

9. Emergency Kit Update

Summer version: extra water (1 gallon minimum), sunscreen, phone charger, reflective windshield shade, jumper cables or portable jump starter.

10. Window Tint Check

Legal tint in Nevada: 35% front sides, any darkness on rear. Quality tint blocks up to 60% of solar heat, dramatically reducing A/C load and interior temperatures.
